Animal activists plan vigil to protest Vick

PITTSBURGH — Animal activists are planning a candlelight vigil outside the Pittsburgh Steelers last preseason game Thursday to protest the signing of quarterback Michael Vick.

Some 600 people have said on Facebook they plan to attend the vigil before Thursday night’s game at Heinz Field against the Carolina Panthers.

Vick returned to football in 2009 after serving 18 months in prison for helping run an interstate dogfighting ring.

Since his release from prison, Vick has advocated against organized animal fighting. Vick has said he can’t change the past, but has worked to make up for his crimes.

Organizers want people to gather about 6 p.m. near the statue of team founder Art Rooney. They’re asking participants to be respectful.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
