John H. Bingham Jr.
John H. “Jack” Bingham, Jr., 90, of Orchard Manor Nursing Home and Personal Care in Grove City, formerly of Volant, Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County, passed away at 4:10 a.m. Saturday at the Grove City Medical Center. It would have been his 66th wedding anniversary.
Jack was born in Slippery Rock, Butler County, on May 16, 1924, to John Henry Bingham Sr. and Lois Mae Heyl Bingham. He married Janet Blanche Hagan Bingham on April 25, 1949. She preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 1983.
Jack and his family had strong ties to Slippery Rock since the early 1800s. Jack’s great-grandfather, William Story Bingham, and his grandfather, Franklin Pierce Bingham, were members of the first committee to raise funds to establish a Slippery Rock Normal School, which now is Slippery Rock University. The Binghams began one of the earliest foundries and the Bingham Hardware Store in Slippery Rock.
Jack graduated from Slippery Rock Campus High School and attended Grove City College.
Jack was a first lieutenant U.S. Army Aircorp veteran, having entered in February 1942 and honorably discharged in December 1945. He then served in the Air Force Reserves until 1957.
Jack retired in 1982 as a machinist from Mesta Machine after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church and was a lifetime member of the Slippery Rock American Legion. He enjoyed reading, fishing, gardening, listening to Big Band music and watching sports. He was an active member in the Silver Sneakers Program at the Grove City YMCA for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara B. and her husband, John P., Cavanaugh of Grove City; one granddaughter, Lisa R. and her husband, Bryan, Alfredo of Hudson, Ohio; one special friend, Millie Cress of Sewickley, Pa.; one step-granddaughter, Colleen and her husband, Darrin, Blackford of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; two stepgrandsons, Patrick and his wife, Cara, Cavanaugh of Wexford, and Brian and his wife, Nicole, Cavanaugh of Pittsburgh; one brother, Franklin P. and his wife, Marilyn, Bingham of Allentown, Pa.; two great-granddaughters, Ava R. and Mila B. Alfredo; three step-great-granddaughters, Morgan, Mackenzie and Marissa Blackford; four step-great-grandsons, Nolan, Nathan, Brady and Brennan Cavanaugh; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one sister, Emily Overmeyer.
BINGHAM — Funeral services for John H. Bingham Jr., who died Saturday, April 25, 2015, will be at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Dr. F. Stanley Keehlwetter, pastor of the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church and Dean of Chapel of Grove City College, presiding.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Interment will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
