Phipps reopens forest

Zebra longwing

PITTSBURGH — Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will reopen the Butterfly Forest on Saturday.

This annual exhibit offers close encounters with live monarchs and zebra longwings, among others, as they emerge from their chrysalides to take flight among the blooms.

There are about 20,000 species of butterflies on Earth and roughly 575 in the U.S., according to the North American Butterfly Association.

The display, on view through Sept. 7, also highlights a variety of tropical plants.

Phipps is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 10 p.m. Fridays.

The Butterfly Forest is included in the price of conservatory admission, which is $15 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and students, and $11 for children ages 2 to 18.
