Democrat John Hanger drops out of race for governor

Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Hanger has dropped out of the race.

“We have tried every possible means to find a way to win and so avoid the necessity of making this decision. With no path to victory, to press on could cause damage to the issues and people for which we campaigned,” Hanger said in a statement.

Hanger of Dauphin County, the former Department of Environmental Protection secretary, was one of six Democrats who were vying for a chance to be their party’s nominee in the May 20 primary.

The five remaining Democratic candidates are state Treasurer Rob McCord of Montgomery County; former DEP Secretary Katie McGinty of Chester County; U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz of Montgomery County; former Auditor General Jack Wagner of Allegheny County; and former state Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf of York County.

Incumbent Republican Gov. Tom Corbett is facing Republican challenger Bob Guzzardi, a Montgomery County businessman, in the primary.
