Drug sweep targets 25 suspects
Butler County Detective Tim Fennell said regular court watchers may recognize names from the list of 25 suspects targeted Tuesday in a drug arrest sweep by the county District Attorney’s Drug Task Force.
A good share of them — mainly street level dealers from the city, and Butler and Center townships — have been arrested before.
“We are hoping with their past records, they won’t be shown any leniency in sentencing,” said Fennell who heads the task force.
District Attorney Richard Goldinger said when a person’s criminal record starts to grow, prosecutors can seek more severe sentences. Sometimes those prior convictions trigger more lengthy mandatory sentences.
“They’re off the streets longer or they’re on supervision longer,” Goldinger said.
The list of suspects from Tuesday’s sweep is about as varied as their alleged activities. They’re males and females, ranging in age from juveniles in high school to those old enough to qualify for AARP.
Fifteen of the defendants are accused of dealing heroin. Crack cocaine comes in a close second at 11. Those drugs, Fennell said, regularly top the list of problems in this county.
But also there were alleged sales of suboxone, MDMA, which is known on the street as ecstasy, morphine pills and oxycodone.
The alleged drug sales were made mainly to undercover police officers, but also to confidential informants. They ranged in time from February 2013 to last month.
The unifying factor among the defendants, according to Fennell, is that investigators want them off the streets.
“These are the people who are poisoning our neighborhoods,” he said.
Fifteen of the suspects were arrested Tuesday. All but one were arraigned by District Judge Pete Shaffer in the city. The standout was arraigned by District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.
Fennell said he expects the rest to be caught within days. Photographs of the suspects are posted on the Facebook page for the Butler City Police.
None of the alleged local dealers is a significant case, Fennell said. However, the task force did arrest a unanticipated 26th suspect who appeared to be a little higher up the dealing ladder.
When arresting the first suspect of the day, 54-year-old Linda Procaccino at her Walker Avenue apartment, investigators encountered 34-year-old Anthony Antonio Mack.
Mack, according to court records, had in his pant pockets three large baggies containing 166 individually wrapped packages of cocaine with a street value of $6,560 as well as $2,840 in currency.
Fennell said Mack, who allegedly acknowledged traveling from his home in Philadelphia to Butler to sell drugs, is charged with possession with intent to deliver drugs and possession of a controlled substance.
Although investigators in the county still are pursuing leads related to the deadly “Theraflu” heroin mix that has been causing overdose deaths throughout the region, Goldinger and Fennell said this sweep had nothing to do with that. None of the people in this sweep are accused of dealing that particular drug.
Fennell said the timing of the arrests was more based on a cooperation of officials including the district judges, the probation, department, city police, county Children and Youth Services, and the sheriff’s department.
“This is what we do,” Fennell said.
