Fallout awaits GOP

Some readers wrote letters to the editor recently expressing support for Pennsylvania’s voter ID law, which now apparently will have to wait until next year for implementation.

I would like to offer a different perspective.

Voter ID laws are voter suppression, and nothing less. They focus disproportionately on minorities, the poor, the elderly and students, which are a large part of the Democratic base.

Only a fool would think that is just a coincidence. One of their own representatives bragged about what these laws actually were designed to do.

In a speech touting the Republicans’ “list of accomplishments,” Majority Leader Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny County, shamelessly declared that voter ID would allow Mitt Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.

If this were done in another country, the Marines would be sent in.

Turzai’s was the most damning statement since Mitch McConnell declared “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

I left the Republican Party because of the way Republicans treated President Bill Clinton, and they haven’t changed much since.

Don’t they think there will be consequences for this sort of childishness? They’re going to find out that there are, in a big way, next month.
