Van on fire causes Route 8 backup
Traffic was backed up through the intersection of Pittsburgh Road and Vogel Road over an hour after a van caught on fire around 5:50 a.m. Tuesday.
The fire happened near Armco Hill around 223 Pittsburgh Road.
Township police said they responded with the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District to a fully engulfed van operated by a Hempstead, N.Y., man. The 40-year-old driver, David Hernandez, along with five passengers, escaped from the vehicle without any injury, police said.
The road was shut down for nearly two hours to clean the road and remove the vehicle.
Around 7 a.m., one lane northbound was open to traffic. Drivers were taking Vogel Road to Decatur Drive to get back onto Route 8.
