Theft suspect faces 3 cases
CHICORA — Criminal cases keep piling up against a 25-year-old Washington Township woman.
State police Saturday filed a pair of felony theft-related cases against Nicole Elizabeth Brown. On Tuesday, troopers were back at District Judge Lewis Stoughton's office with additional paperwork and more charges.
While awaiting still-to-be-scheduled preliminary hearings in the three cases, Brown is in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail.
In one of the felony cases, Brown several months ago allegedly forged another woman's checks to steal more than $1,300, police said.
Then this past weekend, she broke into a neighbor's home and stole a Nintendo Wii video game system, according to court documents.
But when she tried to make a getaway from police early Saturday morning, investigators said she tossed the Wii out her car window as a trooper gave chase.
The defendant is charged with burglary, a felony, theft, and receiving stolen property for allegedly breaking into Traves Sutton's home at the Highview Estates trailer park in Washington Township.
Police believe Sutton's home was burglarized between 5 p.m. Friday and 8:15 a.m. Saturday. Sutton suspected Brown, who lives close by.
Investigators spoke to her at her home, and she denied the break-in and theft. But she refused a police request to search her car and home, documents said.
Soon after police told Brown they planned to seek a search warrant, she got into her car and sped off on Old Brick Road. A trooper, with siren and emergency lights on, gave pursuit.
As Brown approached Branchton Road, police said, she threw the Wii out the window, which police recovered.
During the chase, which reached speeds of 80 mph, Brown ran a stop sign and crossed into the opposing lane of traffic while making turns and cresting hills.
The defendant, in connection with the chase, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, tampering with evidence for throwing out the Wii, careless driving, reckless driving and three other traffic violations.
In the other felony case, Brown is suspected of forging Kathryn Reges' signature on three checks of the Clay Township woman, and cashing them between Feb. 23 and March 3 at an Emlenton bank for a combined $1,350.
Reges discovered the theft after receiving her monthly bank statement.
Bank surveillance cameras helped police identify as Brown as the suspect, documents said.
Brown is charged in that case with theft and three counts of forgery.
Meanwhile, in the latest case, Stoughton on Tuesday arraigned the defendant on a misdemeanor count of access device fraud.
Police said the charge stems from Brown's attempt on June 13 to use a Concord Township woman's credit card to buy clothing at the Clearview Mall in Center Township.
