Sex offender receives time in prison
A registered sex offender will spend 12 to 24 months behind bars and another year on probation for failing to update his address with state police.
Under the state's Megan's Law, some sex offenders are required to report their whereabouts annually, when they move, change employment or enroll in school.
Court records say the defendant, 56-year-old Charles R. Barringer, was assigned the requirement after a 1992 conviction for indecent assault.
Records show he pleaded no contest to the charge in Allegheny County Court, and was sentenced to 2 to 5 years in state prison.
The defendant had apparently served his time and was living in the city when arrested last December.
Court records say Barringer was charged with felony failure to register because he had not updated his address since living in Venango Township at least a month earlier, police said.
Barringer pleaded guilty in June and was sentenced Thursday by Butler County Judge Timothy McCune.
The judge gave Barringer credit for 206 days the defendant had already spent in prison awaiting trial.
However, the judge refused a request by defense attorney Kerry Starr to keep the defendant in the Butler County Prison for the duration of his sentence. Instead, Barringer will be transferred to a state prison.
