Smoke could be seen throughout the area as crews responded to a fire that destroyed a mobile home Monday night, June 1, in Clay Township.

Fire crews were on the scene for more than five-and-a-half hours at 117 Vidic Road, despite the majority of the fire being under control within the first 20 minutes, according to West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department Chief Curt Mershimer. The rest of the time at the scene was spent making sure the fire wouldn’t reignite.

“You have to open everything up and move some stuff around to get to the bulk of the hot embers,” Mershimer said.

One person was in the home when the fire began and no injuries were reported. Mershimer said as an older, single-wide mobile home, the fire progressed quickly through the structure.

The response was temporarily upgraded to a second alarm due to the amount of smoke in the area, but the secondary units were then called off.

The mobile home was still standing, but Mershimer said the inside is uninhabitable.

The state police fire marshal was called to investigate the cause.

The fire was reported just before 9:40 p.m. Mershimer said his crew spent about two hours at the station after cleaning up.

Unionville and Marion Township volunteer fire companies, North Washington Volunteer Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service also responded.
