Adams Township supervisors approve Rt. 228 contribution

ADAMS TWP — The board of supervisors approved the township’s final contribution toward the current phase of Route 228 construction at its meeting Monday, Dec. 8.

The board approved a payment of $500,000, one of four payments it has made.

In total, Adams Township has to contribute around $2 million toward the Route 228 project, according to township manager Mike Tylka.

Adams is one of multiple townships along the route that is making financial contributions to the project.

“It’s the contribution to the current phase of Route 228 that is actively underway. The item that was approved tonight was the final one of those payments,” Tylka said.

Tylka said the Adams Township funds will go to the county, which will spend it on the project costs.

“This is our contribution toward the project, the county is the one who’s facilitated it,” Tylka said.

The current, final phase of the Route 228 corridor improvements, the Mars Railroad West Expansion, is set to upgrade intersections and widen the road to two lanes each way from Pittsburgh Street to Franklin Road, spanning across Adams Township, Seven Fields and Cranberry Township.

Funding has been a concern for the entirety of the project. Back in April, Butler County Commissioner Kim Geyer said the Mars Railroad portion would cost $100 million, though a significant majority of it would come from federal funding.

Much of the project is funded by money coming from a U.S. Department of Transportation Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant.
