Butler tennis edges Shaler

Andrew Bocci, Ben Busler and Jackson Morgus swept their singles matches Tuesday as Butler defeated Shaler, 3-2, in boys tennis action.

Bocci defeated Will Nebiolo 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Busler won his match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Shaler swept the doubles matches, leaving Morgus to win at No. 3 singles to give the match to the Golden Tornado. Morgus won 6-4, 5-7, 7-3 (tiebreaker).

Seneca Valley 5, Knoch 0 — Michael deVyver, Mark Evelsizer and Nathan Craig swept the singles matches as the Raiders improved to 3-1 with this victory over Knoch.

Mars 5, Springdale 0 — Lucas Crawford led the Planets’ sweep by scoring a 6-0, 6-0 win in his singles match.

Softball

Kelsey Ogin homered for Butler, but New Castle rallied for a 7-2 softball win over the Golden Tornado during Tuesday’s season opener on Butler’s diamond.

Morgan Piatt was the winning pitcher for the Red Hurricanes, who snapped a 2-2 tie by scoring five runs in the eighth inning. Keara Mangieri homered for New Castle.
