JACKSON TWP — New students could flood the Seneca Valley School District in the next several years due to the multiple housing developments on the horizon in Jackson Township.

John Demkowicz, district transportation director, told the school board members at their Monday meeting that more than six single- and multifamily housing developments are in various stages of approval or development in the township.

He said the largest is Creekside Manor, a townhome neighborhood planned for an area off Mercer Road near the Connoquenessing Creek.

Another large plan in the works is Walnut Ridge, a neighborhood of single-family homes off Tollgate School Road.

Demkowicz said township officials send updates on the new developments coming in the future.

Tracy Vitale, district superintendent, said the district will be able to offer an excellent education to any student whose family locates in one of the new plans.

“We want the public to be aware that we are really prepping for this growth,” Vitale said.

She said a demographic study last year revealed that the district could see 8,000 total students in the next five years.

Vitale said because administrators are being proactive about the potential growth, it will not cause an increase in class sizes.

“We are really committed to keeping our class sizes small, especially in the elementary grades,” she said.

Due to the potential growth, Vitale said, the next building to be renovated and expanded will be Seneca Valley Intermediate High School.

She said board members will be asked in the near future to approve the administration seeking requests for proposals for an architect for the IHS project.

In the future, all of the district’s elementary schools will be reviewed to determine whether they should be renovated or replaced with a new building, Vitale said.

She added that board members at their March meeting will hear options for the Evans City Elementary/Middle School, which was closed last year.

The aging building is in an advancing state of disrepair.
