Mars defeats North Hills, 73-72, in thriller

Sfanos’ clutch basket the difference in tight matchup

A buzzer-beating shot by Tasso Sfanos pushed Mars past North Hills at home Friday night, with the make giving the Planets a 73-72 victory.

Sfanos totaled 40 points and six three-pointers in the clash, while Remi Black chipped in with another 13. Mars improved its record to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in WPIAL Section 4-5A. The Indians (13-4, 5-1) suffered their first section loss of the year.

Summit Academy 89, Aquinas Academy 83 — Summit Academy weathered a 57-point performance from Aquinas Academy’s Vinnie Cugini to post this victory.

Allen Grimes bucketed 25 points for the Knights and Elijah Adams added another 23 — including five treys. Ki’Ron Douglas (16 points) and Tayvone Bibbs (13) rounded out those to total double-figures for Summit Academy.

A-C Valley 78, Venango Catholic 45 — The trio of Jay Clover, Brody Dittman, and Alex Preston nearly outscored its opponents on the road.

Lincoln Park 71, North Catholic 55 — Max Hurray pinned up 25 points and Max Rottmann 14, but the Trojans (10-6, 6-2) bowed to the WPIAL Section 2-4A leaders.

Keystone 53, Moniteau 37 — The Warriors were held in check in the second half at home, being limited to 17 points in the last 16 minutes. Chason Delarosa-Rugg led Moniteau scorers with 11 points.

Girls Basketball

Mars notched a 50-47 victory against Fox Chapel, with Lauren Atwell (14 points), Olivia Donnelly (11), and Annalynn Isaacs (10) all pouring in double-digits.

The Planets improved to 7-1 in WPIAL Section 2-5A play and 13-3 overall, rebounding from a loss against Hampton on Monday night.

Bowling

Butler swept its matches against Kiski Area on Tuesday, the boys improving to 9-0 with a 7-0 victory and the girls moving to 7-2 with a 4-3 win.

Eric DeVore paced te Golden Tornado boys with a 711 series and 269 game. He is averaging 231 over 27 games this season. Rocco Rice added a 692 series and 253 game while Luke Keene had a 621 series and 237 game.

Kelsee McConnell paced the girls win with a 660 series and 227 game. Makenzie Zimmerman had a 517 series and 224 game. Butler’s girls clinched second place in the WPIBL North Section.

Both Butler teams host their final section match of the season against North Allegheny on Feb. 1 at Family Bowlaway.
