Pennsylvania bill ‘Damar’s Law’ would require AEDs at school sporting events
A Pennsylvania state senator has introduced a bill to ensure that all school sporting events have the necessary equipment to deal with medical emergencies.
Sen. Marty Flynn, D-22nd, introduced “Damar’s Law” named after McKees Rocks native and Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin. The bill would require automated external defibrillators, also known as AEDs, at all school sporting events in the event of a medical emergency.
All coaches would be required to train on use of AEDs.
The bill comes after Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during a Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals NFL game on Jan. 2. Medical personnel needed to restart his heart on the field.
Flynn said in his statement that while Hamlin’s recovery has been hailed as miraculous, “it is undeniable that the immediate response saved his life.”
