North Catholic students compete in Hometown High Q

A Hometown High Q competition featuring a team of students from North Catholic High School is airing Saturday.

Senior Andre Giannotta, junior Grace Krotine and senior Chris Smith competed against another team remotely through Zoom on Tuesday. The program airs on KDKA at 11 a.m. Saturday. A repeat airing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Oct. 1.

This is the fifth year North Catholic High School has competed in the competition, which involves questions from a variety of curriculum areas.

North Catholic teams have finished in the top three in the past and advanced to the semifinals in 2020 before the competition was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, said Sean Malone, a history teacher and faculty sponsor of the team.

The teams have won a total of about $2,000 for the school during those previous contests, he said.

A new team was selected this year to replace last year’s team, which was made of seniors who graduated, Malone said.

He said he selects students for the team by using a test with questions from various categories on the show.
