Pa. jobless rate rises 5th month

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate rose again in June for the fifth straight month, although payrolls leaped up by 20,000.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Friday the jobless rate rose to 5.6 percent in June, up from 5.5 percent in May. The rate was 4.6 percent in January, before it started its five-month streak. The national rate was 4.9 percent in June.

Meanwhile, a survey of employers found that seasonally adjusted non-farm payrolls rose by about 20,000 jobs in June, closer to 5.9 million. That broke a streak of two straight monthly payroll declines.

The civilian labor force shrank by 4,000 after hitting a record high above 6.54 million in May. Employment dropped by 7,000 while unemployment grew by 3,000.

Friday’s figures are preliminary and could change.
