Legion, VFW can help
I read the April 26 letter to the editor by Joe Geiger (“Frustration over DD214”) and James H. Matson’s April 30 response (“Vets’ ID cards available”).
Geiger was looking for help in finding his DD214. He stated that there should be a group for veterans in need.
In fact, there are several, with at least two having a statewide network of service officers to provide help for veterans. Both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have service officers to provide help.
The American Legion service office in Pittsburgh can be reached at 412-395-6231, and people there can refer veterans to the service officer in their area.
As to Matson’s statement about DD214s ending up in the office of John Cyprian, Butler County veterans services director, while I have issues about Cyprian’s performance in that position, he only has access to DD214s for veterans who have needed help in the past or who have recorded their discharge papers at the recorder’s office.
The goverment doesn’t check to see where veterans live and send them there automatically. That’s a veteran’s responsibility.
Veterans should have received a copy of their discharge and DD214 at their discharge site.
