Saxonburg deals with road problems
SAXONBURG — Borough council Wednesday took action to remedy urgent road and flooding problems.
Council opted to replace about 200 feet of pavement on Thelma Drive.
Road superintendent Tom Knights said the road is crumbling in sections from Water Street to the second driveway.
"It almost looks like a reverse avalanche," he said about the pattern of fragments.
Knights said the only sure solution is cutting to the bottom.
"It's too deep for just milling," he said.
Knights recommended replacing the entire stretch of road rather than just patch portions.
"I hate to see piece work," he said.
Knights estimated it will likely exceed $10,000.
Borough manager Mary Papik said that would come from the liquid fuels fund, which totals $41,760.
In other action, council delayed a stormwater project on East Main Street to fund water catch basin repairs on other roads.
Papik said the borough already corrected problems on Bella and Carol drives, which included sinkholes.
"We have no choice but to fix them," she said.
Papik said South Isabella Street looks to be the next road where similar issues will occur so the $15,000 allotted to East Main Street must be shifted.
The borough also will replace catch basins on Aderhold Road.
