Election won't fix nation

I am too smart to be a Demo-crat but too poor to be a Republican. People in both political parties bicker back and forth while missing the big picture.

This fall some believe we must overwhelmingly vote for Republicans so we can stop the damage that President Barack Obama and his party are causing to this country. I agree that we must at least balance the scales of power to make it more even. If the scales are tilted too far in either direction, it can bring tyranny.

That is what we are seeing now — an oligarchy deciding what is best for all without regard to what the people want.

An important aspect of our system of government is that it is based on the rule of law. This concept is a direct descendant of Hebrew law and the Ten Commandments.

Together with the concept of unalienable rights from God, these concepts helped ensure a way of life that respected the dignity of every individual. Another important aspect to America's Constitution is that it has as its basis the distinctly Christian idea that man is basically sinful.

Every one of the Founding Fathers understood this truth. It has been said that the 16th century Protestant reformer John Calvin was the single most influential person regarding our Constitution. The result was that the Founders built into the Constitution an elaborate system of checks and balances. This is evident in the horizontal plane of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.

It also is evident in the vertical plane of federalism — states' powers versus federal powers.

Perhaps the most famous statement in America's Declaration of Independence is, "All men are created equal." The concept of universal human rights and equality comes exclusively from the biblical ideas that all people are created in the image of God.

Of course, some will continue to see only what they want to see, so they think things will get better with Obama. But it won't.

The biggest mistake people make is putting their hope and faith in man. Man will neither save nor redeem us because man is fallible. It doesn't matter which party they are in.

One president did not cause the problems we face today, and they didn't happen overnight. Therefore, we won't fix them in November.

What we need is divine intervention, but to get that, we must admit that we were wrong and that we really do need God.
