Freeport Area School District responded to “inappropriate statements of a potentially threatening nature” made by a student Monday.

A letter sent to families in the district by Superintendent Ian Magness said that administration at the high school was notified of the inappropriate statements Monday morning. According to the letter, an immediate investigation was conducted and continues alongside Buffalo Township Police Department.

Details of the alleged threat were not released.

Magness wrote that the messages were believed to be an isolated incident.

“Given our school’s many safety protocols, including threat assessment, School Police Officer presence, and daily morning searches, it was determined that school could operate safely, as normal,” Magness said.

He encouraged parents to talk to their children about the power of their words and what is and is not appropriate.

“Our administrators, teaching staff and all employees in our district implore our families to help us continue to keep our buildings safe and welcoming places for our students by having these conversations as families with their children,” he said. “If you are in need of guidance or advice on how to have these conversations with your child, please do reach out to the School Counselors and/or Licensed Professional Counselors assigned to your child’s school building.”
