Plane crash victim was Ohio pilot

The Mercer County Coroner has released the name of a pilot who was killed on Wednesday when his single-engine airplane crashed in a wooded area.

Richard Briggs, 65, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, died from blunt force trauma after crashing his single-engine Cessna 210 near Tri-County Industries in Pine Township, Mercer County, according to a news release from the office of John Libonati, Mercer County Coroner.

Preliminary information suggests the plane being flown by Briggs was “experiencing significant mechanical problems prior to the crash and that efforts were being made in an attempt to land safely prior to the accident,” according to the release.

The crash, which included fire after the plane made impact with the ground, occurred at 5:42 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Associated Press reported that a passenger in the plane was taken to a hospital with burns and crash-related injuries, but no further information was available on Friday regarding that individual.

Libonati said the Federal Aviation Administration will make a ruling on the cause of the crash after their investigation is complete.
