We know the importance of physical activity, but childhood obesity still on rise

Time, and time again, we have been informed of the importance of physical activity.

Study, after study, supports that an increase in physical activity decreases childhood obesity. Yet, childhood obesity remains on the rise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports in 2007-08 found in a sample of 3,249 children, 14.8% were overweight, 16.8% were obese, and 4.9% were severely obese.

Moving forward a decade, another report was taken for 2017-18. In this sample of 2,824 children, 16.1% were classified as overweight, 19.3% were obese, and 6.1% were severely obese. All three increased.

What can we do to prevent this upward trend? Start early! Let children play and be active. Set an example. Steer children towards healthier food options and encourage an active lifestyle. Get involved. Allow children to join public leagues, school activities, and community events.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we can remain in motion. Families can get active together, encouraging play time and at home activities. Chores are an excellent way to help around the house, teach discipline, and remain moving. Lastly, adventuring into the outdoors can encourage healthy hobbies like walking, biking, and hiking.
