Golf teams move on

SV, North Catholic, Mars advance in WPIAL

The Seneca Valley, Mars and North Catholic golf teams will all be competing at Thursday's WPIAL Championships, thanks to their efforts on Tuesday.

SV and Mars both qualified at separate Class 3A semifinals. The Raiders shot 389 and placed second out of 10 teams at Beaver Valley Golf Club.

Nolan Nicklas led the way with a 73, followed by a 76 from both Lucas Bruns and Joel Goodzinski.

Luke Robertson's 81 and Nolan Kummer's 83 rounded out the scoring for SV.

Central Catholic (365) and Mt. Lebanon (401) are the other two teams to emerge from the event.

Mars played with eight other teams at The Links at Spring Church and finished second with 397 strokes.

Blake Bertolo carded a 74 for the Planets while teammate Ryan Steigerwald came in with a 77.

Will Campbell and Wes Scurci both managed an 81 and Raghav Kalbhor an 84.

Fox Chapel (387) and Peters Township (398) also advanced.

North Catholic played in a Class 2A semifinal at Meadowink Golf Course and was second with 416 strokes. Individual scores for the Trojans were not available.

Derry (396) and Sewickley Academy (418) also moved on.

The WPIAL Class 3A and 2A championships will both include six teams. Cedarbrook Golf Course will host both events Thursday.

Taylor Welter had 14 kills as Butler defeated North Hills, 3-0. Scores were 25-12, 25-21, 25-23.Ava Plunkard had six kills and 10 digs, Megan Penrod six aces and 10 digs for the Golden Tornado (4-5, 6-6).Butler travels to Shaler Thursday.Freeport 3, Hampton 2 — The Yellowjackets dropped the first two sets before winning the final three. Scores were 21-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 19-17.Keystone 3, Moniteau 0 — The Warriors fell to the Panthers by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-11.No other details were provided.

Lauren MacDonald scored both goals as North Catholic concluded section play with a 2-0 victory over Quaker Valley.Jayden Sharpless assisted on both goals for the Trojanettes. Riley Kumer made four saves in getting the shutout.North Catholic plays its final regular season match Thursday at South Park.

Eleven different players scored for Karns City, led by Myles McCully, Colson Ritzert and Reid Campbell's two goals apiece, in a 15-2 win over Keystone.Alex Williams and Cole Sherwin also scored for .Seth Apel and Brett English scored for Keystone.The win clinched for Karns City its 18th straight Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League South Division title.
