Knoch falls to G'burg Salem

JEFFERSON TWP — With an offense full of weapons, at least one star is bound to shine.

That star was Greensburg Salem running back Rashad Canady, who rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Lions defeated Knoch, 34-13, in WPIAL 4A Greater Allegheny action Friday night.

“He (Canady) run the ball tonight like he has done for us in the past,” Greensburg Salem coach Dave Keefer said. “Rashad runs with the ball downhill and that's what we wanted him to do. He's going to be a big part of what we do moving forward.”

The Golden Lions got on the board first off a 63-yard touchdown pass from Kayden Teska to Jayden Stevens.

Teska has been one of the more efficient quarterbacks this season and Donavin Waller has been his favorite targets so far and Knoch knew that coming in.

“We knew we needed to get after the quarterback,” Knoch coach Brandon Mowry said. “I thought our secondary did a pretty good job. (JJ) Szebalskie did a great job covering number 10 (Waller) and that was the gameplan, we knew we needed to take that kid away.”

Knoch got on the board late in the first quarter when Keagan Fraser ran it in from 15 yards out to cut the deficit. Greensburg Salem then answered back with Canady's first touchdown of the evening.

In the third quarter, both offenses failed to gain much ground, but Canady was able to slow the game down in the fourth with his second and third rushing touchdowns of the game.

“This is a tough place to play,” Keefer said. “You're playing on grass, not used to it. I didn't think we were as polished as what we've been at times offensively.”

Fraser scored late in the fourth for the Knights, but there wasn't enough time as Greensburg Salem held on for a 21-point conference victory.

“Frustrated, I guess, is a good word,” Mowry said. “We just need to find consistency. We're too much execute there, then mistake here. It just comes back to working hard on Monday on that.”

Last week in its win over Deer Lakes, the Knoch offense saw more of Fraser as both a runner and a passer.

This week, Fraser was used in a more traditional running back role, as Carson Kosecki took the snaps in the shot gun for the Knights.

“That was just seeing what works and what doesn't,” Mowry said. “Just wanted to see what sticks there and through the week things looked pretty good and we came out with that offense. Just got to be consistent.”

The Knights move to 1-3 on the season and will be at Armstrong next week.

“They're going to want to sling the ball around,” Mowry said. “Our secondary has got to be ready to make a play on that ball because they like to throw it around, no doubt.”

Armstrong fell to Hampton Friday night, 21-20.
