Volunteering matters: You can do it, too

The COVID-19 pandemic may have curbed many in-person volunteer opportunities for those who are concerned about their health amid the recent rise in cases, but one local boy is proving it’s possible to make a difference despite the pandemic.

Early into the pandemic — back in spring 2020 — a study by VolunteerMatch reported upwards of 50 percent of nonprofits surveyed noted heavy cancellations in volunteer attendance.

In March 2020, 68% reported heavy cancellations. By May, the number dropped to 53 %.

An additional 25% of those surveyed reported some cancellations on both occasions.

A November study by Fidelity Charitable showed two of every three volunteers included in a survey reported decreased or stopped volunteer activities due to the pandemic.

The same study showed 73 % of those surveyed intended to return when it was “safe” to do so.

Though the vaccine has likely increased those who are willing to volunteer, few studies are yet to share how the delta variant and recent increase in cases is affecting the volunteer poll.

That being said, it’s perhaps more important than ever to think about others and help others in need.

Butler Catholic sixth-grader, Drew Weifenbaugh is among those helping others.

In a recent Butler Eagle story, our reporter detailed how the 11-year-old is finishing his summer campaign to raise money and supplies for Operation Troop Appreciation.

The son of Paul and Renee Weifenbaugh, Drew first contributed to Operation Troop Appreciation when he was younger.

He made cards when he was as young as 5-years-old.

To support the cause, Drew sent letters to Butler County businesses.

He asked friends and neighbors to consider contributing.

He did this all this summer amid the pandemic — and despite the pandemic.

Kudos to Drew for making a difference, and letting nothing stand in his way.
