Fine art, photography on display during fest

Artwork by Stan Walchesky will be among the more than 150 entries in the Saxonburg Fine Art display and contest.

One component of the Saxonburg Festival of the Arts, in addition to all the crafts, food and Octoberfest activities, is the Saxonburg Fine Art competition and display.

Carol Walchesky helps with the show and reports that there are more than 150 entries so far. The theme this year is “Wildlife”

Categories in the fine art contest include: oil, watercolor and mixed media for professionals, nonprofessionals and students.

Cash prizes, which have been increased this year, will be awarded based on judging done Friday. Awards will go to Best of Show and Best Theme, along with student ribbons.

The display takes place 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 11 and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 12 in the lower level of the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church

For more information, visit SaxonburgFineArt.com or call 724-352-3403.

Another arts component of the festival is the Photography Show and contest, coordinated by Sue Yacono.

The photography contest’s 10 categories are: the generation, sports, scenic, wildlife, domestic animals, people, black and white, monochromatic with color splash, open and youth. Entry in the photography contest is free.

The photography will also be exhibited in the lower level at Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian.

Hours for the Photography Show include an additional day: 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 10, and then 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 11 and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 12, the same as the fine art show.

Photography prizes will be awarded during judging the morning of Sept. 10. The actual ribbons, however, will not appear until October, Yacono said.

“The company is late making them,” she said. “The company said they’re really down employees and having trouble getting to making them.”

Admission to view the art shows is free.
