Rotary presents scholarships

ZELIENOPLE — Six local high school graduates are heading off to college this month with some scholarship money from the Rotary Club of Zelienople.

Seneca Valley High School graduates Trevor Elliott, Lillian Karchut, Sophia Kunkel and Hunter Reynolds, and North Catholic High School graduates Zachary Baker and Shealin O’Shea were each awarded $1,500 for their continuing education.

The Zelienople Rotary Club allocates $9,000 in scholarship funds to local students every year.

Elliot, Karchut, Baker and O’Shea received the club’s Doc Viola Community Service Scholarship, which recognizes local volunteerism and academic achievements.

Elliott, of Zelienople, will attend Case Western Reserve University, where he will study civil engineering and compete on the diving team. He is the son of Ron and Gina Elliott of Zelienople. Karchut, daughter of Jeff and Cara Karchut of Harmony, plans to study international business at Grove City College.

Baker of Harmony, is the son of Scott and Joella Baker. He will study biology at Queens College of Charlotte.

O’Shea, daughter of Patrick and Michelle O’Shea of Harmony, plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh where she will major in business information systems with a certificate in business analytics.

The Lutz Journalism Scholarship was awarded to Kunkel, daughter of Robert and Yelena Kunkel of Cranberry Township. This award is given to a student who plans to pursue a writing career. Kunkel will study English and creative writing at Hollins University.

Reynolds, son of Paul and Tonya Reynolds of Harmony, received the Norbert Belsterling Vocational Scholarship. This award is given to a student who plans to attend a trade school. Academic performance and community service are also considered for this scholarship. Reynolds plans to attend Pittsburgh Technical College and study electrical technology.

Four of the students and their families were honored at a picnic dinner held at the Rotary Club Shelter in Zelienople Community Park. The remaining two students, who were unavailable on that evening, attended a morning club meeting to receive their awards.

The Housing Authority of the County of Butler’s 27th Annual Scholarship Luncheon was held recently at the YWCA, 120 W. Cunningham St.

The scholarships are designed to recognize and encourage participants of the Housing Authority’s programs to pursue higher education and achieve economic independence.

This year the program participants will receive seven awards totaling $5,000.

Scholarships awarded were:

Dollar Bank, $1,000 to Ameela Boyd

Mars National Bank, $1,000 to Damian Gurner;

PNC, $1,000 to Damian Gurner;

A-Tech, $500 to Ameela Boyd;

Armstrong/Jud Sedwick, $500 to Ameela Boyd;

NexTier, $500 to Ameela Boyd;

Stepanian & Menchyk LLP, $500 to Ameela Boyd.

Two Butler County Community College students who say the work ethic of their fathers inspires their drive to succeed are among 207 students who will receive $1,000 scholarships that recognize scholastic achievement and leadership potential.

Nineteen-year-old Butler residents Ian Moore and Megan Denny are BC3 business administration students named 2021 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars. Each plans a future in finance, and each is an officer in the college’s Rho Phi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international academic honor society for two-year colleges and programs based in Jackson, Miss. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation funds Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa members.
