A young male from Florida was transported via helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital after rear ending another vehicle on Route 8 Wednesday afternoon.

According to Penn Township police chief Jack Ripper, the crash is still under investigation, but he said a woman driving a Toyota RAV was making a right turn from the southbound lane into the Diehl Mitsubishi lot when she was struck from behind by a Nissan Versa Note around 1:20 p.m.

The male driver of the Nissan was in and out of consciousness at the scene, but the woman driving the Toyota was not severely injured. Ripper said the male was transported via Butler Ambulance to a helipad, and was flown from there to a hospital.

The Nissan was totaled, Ripper said, but the Toyota took less damage. Both had to be towed from the scene.

Ripper said the responding departments rerouted traffic from the southbound lane to the center lane, and let northbound traffic flow normally. The road reopened around 3 p.m.

Penn Township Police, Butler Ambulance Service, Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Company, Butler Township Police and the Butler County Sheriff’s department responded to the scene.
