Osprey dies after being found outside its nest in Moraine State Park

The Tamarack Wildlife Center in Saegertown is treating an osprey that was found outside his nest at Moraine State Park Friday night.

An osprey found near the Moraine State Park nesting tower after a storm last week died last night.

"It is with sadness that I share the following from Tamarack Wildlife Center about the chick that was rescued on Saturday," said Michelle Zulick Huff, a Facebook user in a post to the Friends of Moraine State Park group. "Unfortunately the osprey passed overnight. Its respiratory rates were still high last night so its condition was guarded."

Moraine State Park rangers had transported the fledgling osprey from the park Saturday afternoon to be treated for an apparent injury. It had been found after a storm Friday night.

Evaluation at the Tamarack Wildlife Center found that the chick was not severely injured beyond dehydration.

However, Carol Holmgren, executive director of center, said the chick has some health issues the animal doctors at the center need to fix before releasing him back into the wild.

The Tamarack Wildlife Center is a nonprofit wildlife treatment center that takes in injured wild animals from the public. The center treats animals at no charge and is funded by donations.
