Fire departments put out Second St. blaze on Saturday
Fire crews tackled a fire for nearly three hours Saturday morning.
Butler city, township and VA fire departments responded to a reported structure fire at 5:40 a.m. at 700 Second Street.
Butler Fire Chief Chris Switala said the first crews arrived within five minutes of the call.
“There was light smoke coming from a basement garage,” Switala said. “All the occupants were evacuated safely.”
Switala said the fire was largely contained to the items stored in the garage, and he believes it started near a couch stored in there.
Though firefighters were at the scene until 8:22 a.m., the fire never escalated to a point of needing more departments, according to Switala.
“The fire was quickly knocked down with one hose line,” he said. “We set up ventilation fans to remove the smoke.”
He said the cause is still under investigation.
“There was smoke damage throughout the house, approximately $15,000,” Switala said.
