Woman sentenced for shooting son's leg

She will be jailed for 1 to 2 years

A Clearfield Township woman said she thought she was in control of her life before shooting her 15-year-old son in the leg.

Jenny Lee Gaiser, 38, of Chicora, spoke Thursday about the November shooting during her sentencing for aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.County Judge William Shaffer sentenced Gaiser to one to two years in jail followed by 18 months of probation. Gaiser appeared by video from the Butler County Prison.“Prior to this, I thought I was in control of my life,” Gaiser said. “This has opened my eyes that I was not dealing with issues in my life, and I chose to self-medicate. I want to take care of my issues.”As part of Gaiser's sentence, she must undergo a mental health evaluation and follow any recommended treatments.Gaiser was charged in November after a fight started with her son pouring beer into the toilet.According to state police, Gaiser began drinking alcohol after she arrived home, and after some time, the 15-year-old started dumping Gaiser's beer into the toilet. That, police said, made Gaiser upset, and when her son took her keys, Gaiser began punching him in an attempt to get them back.Gaiser then threatened to stab her son with scissors, a state police affidavit stated. She then “hit him a couple times in the leg” with a pair of scissors, but they were too dull to cause injury.State police said Gaiser “broke through” her bedroom door to grab a .22 caliber rifle. Her son asked Gaiser multiple times to put the gun down before closing her bedroom door and trying to hold it shut. Then, Gaiser told her son that she would shoot through the door if he did not move from it, police continued. She made good on that threat, according to state troopers. Gaiser's son heard a gunshot and felt pain in his leg. Then, he ran to a neighbor's house for help.Police arrived at the scene slightly after 11:30 p.m. Nov. 3, shortly before the son was flown to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh by helicopter, where he was treated for a gunshot wound in his left thigh.Gaiser has been in jail since her arrest and received 184 days of credit for time already served.
