Saxonburg's II-VI Inc. has received a more than $400 million award from Apple Inc. to produce future iPhone components.

The $410 million award, which comes from Apple's Advanced Manufacturing Fund, will go toward creating additional capacity and accelerating delivery of components integral to the flagship smartphone's Face ID-related and other features.

II-VI's new $410 million award builds on top of a $390 million Apple awarded in 2017 for the same type of work.

Apple said II-VI's vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, or VCSELS, help power Face ID, Memoji, Animoji and portrait-mode selfies, and added II-VI works with Apple to build lasers used in its LiDAR Scanner, which helps “deliver faster, more realistic augmented reality experiences,” according to Apple, and improves Apple devices' cameras in low-light situations.
