Pennsylvania asks drivers to save lives, become organ donors

The Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Department of Transportation are encouraging drivers to register as organ donors.

To recognize April as Donate Life Month, the Department of Transportation added a button on its website that allows drivers to become an organ donor in 30 seconds,

Registering as an organ donor can help save the lives of people who need organ or tissue transplants, according to a joint press release from the two departments.

More than 7,000 Pennsylvanians await organ transplants, and more than 4.9 million are registered organ donors, the press release continued.

Driver’s license and identification card holders, as well as registered vehicle owners, can also support organ donation programs by donating $3 to the Robert P. Casey Memorial Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Trust Fund at the time of application and/or renewal, according to the press release.

Proceeds from the fund are used to educate and promote awareness of the importance of organ donation through non-profit organizations like the Center for Organ Recovery and Education and the Gift of Life Donor Program. Pennsylvanians have donated more than $16.8 million over the life of the fund.
