Athletes of the Week: Record efforts steal show

Slippery Rock High School senior javelin standout Josh Kingerski has been named Butler Eahle Boys Athlete of the Week for shattering the school record in the event.
Fox, Kingerski shine for KC, Slippery Rock

This is the first weekly installment of a new Butler Eagle sports feature. Each Thursday, we will be profiling a male and female high school sports athlete of the week while recognizing six local athletes shown in the advertisement below. One wasted little time setting a school record. The other had a pair of ultra-productive days of competition. For Slippery Rock senior Josh Kingerski and Karns City junior Ashley Fox, it's all in a day's work.Kingerski shattered the Rockets' boys javelin record despite not competing in that event for all that long. Fox had a day on the softball field — then a wild day of softball and track and field — she won't soon forget.“I didn't start throwing the javelin until my sophomore year,” Kingerski said. “A friend talked me into trying out for track and I listened to him.”Kingerski threw the javelin 152 feet, 5 inches that first season. He couldn't build on that last season as there was no high school spring sports season in 2020.“I invested a lot of time in the weight room last spring,” Kingerski said. “I knew I had to get stronger. I wanted to make my senior year count.”He's certainly done that so far.Kingerski heaved the javelin 190 feet, 7 inches in a meet last week. That easily bested the previous school mark of 186-10, set by Doug Orloski in 2012.Slippery Rock coach Tom Meling doesn't believe Kingerski is done yet.“Josh is always working at it. He's honing his craft,” Meling said. “He takes so much pride in this.“When we received word our season was shot down after one week of practice last year, Josh approached me and asked if he could take a javelin home with him. That's when I knew he was serious about this.“He can definitely hit 200 feet this year. There's no doubt about that.”Kingerski wants to go a step beyond.“My goal is 210 feet,” he said. “(Saturday's Butler County Classic) is only our fourth meet of the season. We have time to go yet.“I need to work on my hard block (plant) and leverage. I know I can do better. I've gotten stronger while maintaining flexibility.”Fox plays center field for the Karns City softball team. She had a game against Redbank Valley last week that was once-in-a-lifetime.Fox hit two home runs, added a triple, single, eight RBI and four runs scored in a Gremlin victory. Once-in-a-lifetime?Maybe not for her.“I hit two home runs in one inning for my travel team two years ago,” Fox said. “That was pretty crazy. I didn't think anything would beat that.”She may have beat both days with what she pulled off on Saturday.Karns City had a softball game that morning against A-C Valley. Fox contributed a double, single and three RBI in the Gremlins' 10-1 triumph. The Butler County Classic track and field meet began at 11 a.m. at Butler's Art Bernardi Stadium. Fox competes in the javelin, among other events.“The girls javelin was one of the first field events of the day for that meet and I figured there was no way I could make it,” Fox said. “Then I got word that they would let me throw with the boys javelin throwers and allow my scores to count in the girls event.“I really wanted to see how I'd do. We jumped in the car right after the game and headed over to Butler.”Fox wound up throwing the javelin 129 feet, 9 inches — good for second place in the event — and good enough to snap the previous school record of 120 feet. She beat her own record by hitting 133 feet Tuesday night.“I hit 119 feet when I threw last year, so I figured I'd get that record at some point,” Fox said. “I just didn't expect to get it on that day ... I wasn't even expecting to be throwing that day.”Fox has played volleyball for Karns City as well. Besides the javelin, she competes in the 4x100 relay, 100 meters and long jump for the Gremlins.“Softball has been my favorite sport since I was little,” she said. “If I get a chance to play ball in college ... I would love that.”
