SV wrestling trio wins regional titles

North Catholic, slippery Rock girls get playoff wins; Butler girls end season with 6A defeat at Norwin

Seneca Valley wrestlers Tyler Chappell, Dylan Chappell and Alejandro Herrera-Rondon all won championships at the PIAA West Class AAA Super Regional Saturday in Altoona.

Herrera-Rondon improved to 36-0 on the season, scoring a win by default over Waynesburg's Rocco Welsh — the same foe he faced in the WPIAL final — in the 152-pound regional final. Herrera-Rondon also won matches by a 12-1 decision and by a pin in 4:25.

Dylan Chappell (35-2)also had a rematch with his WPIAL finals opponnent — Hempfield's Briar Priest — in the 132-pound regional title match. Chappell won by a 6-5 decision.

He also won a 5-1 decision and scored a pin in 2:52 in the regional.

Tyler Chappell (34-2) decisioned Dom Flatt of Solanco 3-1 in the 106-pound regional final. He also won bouts by decisions of 2-1 and 3-0.

All three SV wrestlers will compete as high seeds in this weekend's PIAA Championships in Hershey.

Knoch senior Eli Reese placed fourth at 215 pounds at the PIAA West Class AA super regional. He lost his first match by an 8-4 decision, then battled back in consolations with decisions of 13-4 and 4-2 to reach the consolation final, where he dropped a 9-1 decision.

Butler 189-pounder Cooper Baxter saw his season ended in AAA Saturday, losing decisions of 8-4 and 13-4. He was 22-5 this season.

Butler's season came to an end Saturday with a 53-33 WPIAL Class 6A quarterfinal loss at No. 3 seed Norwin.The Golden Tornado (12-9) trailed 26-19 at halftime before the Knights began the third quarter with an 11-0 run.“We played them hard,” Butler coach Mark Maier said. “This was a more competitive game than the first times we played them.”Norwin defeated Butler 49-26 and 54-29 during the regular season.Sarayne Forbes led the Tornado with 12 points, sinking three treys.“Our seniors were leaders all year while serving different roles and helped enable the program to climb another rung up the ladder with a playoff win this season,” Maier said. “We're definitely trending in the right direction.”BUTLER 33Sarayne Forbes 12, Sam Killer 3, Ali Altman 5, Makenna Maier 6, Maisy Gibson 2, Aubree Tack 5. Freeport's Mark Livingston rolled the high game (279) and series (774) at the Western PA Boys Team Regional Championships at North Versailles.Neither Butler nor Freeport advanced to the state tournament, however. The three advancing teams were regional champion Hempfield, North Allegheny and Central Catholic.
