Class AA swim meet offers NC's Carmazzi chance at gold

Saturday's WPIAL Class AA swimming championship meet offers Brittney Carmazzi one last chance to earn gold in the 100-yard butterfly.

More importantly, the senior from North Catholic has another opportunity to improve her time in the event.

Carmazzi placed second in the event the last three years, swimming a personal-best time of 57.60 seconds last February.

She is seeded first for this year's event, which will be held at Upper St. Clair High School, with a time of 57.93.

“It's been a bit frustrating, coming so close to winning three straight years, but I look more for improvement with my time,” said Carmazzi, whose seed time came in North's final meet of the regular season against Fox Chapel.

“That's the best I've ever done in-season,” she said. “It gives me confidence that I'll be able to drop time at WPIALs.”

North coach Joella Baker is confident of that, too.

“What I love about Brittney is that she fights for every stroke,” she said.

Freeport junior Alexis Schrecongost is looking to add another medal to her collection.

Between relays and individual swims, she has previously competed in eight events at the district meet, placing no worse than sixth.

She is ranked fourth in the 100 freestyle and second in the breaststroke.

“Even with the shutdown this past year, she was extremely active in dry-land training,” said Freeport coach Nikki Heasley. “Hopefully, she still has her best to give.”

The WPIAL meet has traditionally been held at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool. Schrecongost is unfamiliar with Upper St. Clair's pool.

“I swam at Pitt all the time with my club team,” she said. “It's disappointing that we couldn't get in at Upper St. Clair to practice before the meet, but I'm not really concerned with it. I think a new environment will hype me up more.

“I spent a lot of the offseason working on arm strength and cardio. I'm hoping to at least get top three in the breaststroke.”

Knoch's Caden Traggiai and Mars' Aidan Wolf will both be working for trips to the medal stand (top eight) in the same events.Traggiai is seeded sixth and seventh in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, respectively.Wolf is ranked seventh and ninth.North Catholic has six entries seeded in the top five, led by Matt Littleton with his No. 3 seed in the butterfly.Due to COVID concerns, the number of swimmers in each event qualifying for the state meet has been cut in half this season, from 32 to 16.In Class AA, only district champions are assured of a spot, followed by just six at-large bids from across the state. In years past, 16 at-large swimmers made it to the PIAA meet.
