Freeport girls fall in OT

Season ends with 38-31 playoff loss

BUFFALO TWP — Offensive woes were not exclusive to either Mount Pleasant or Freeport Tuesday night.

But they plagued the Yellowjackets when it mattered most.

Freeport was held scoreless in overtime — missing all four of its field goal attempts and each of four free throw attempts in the process — in a 38-31 WPIAL 4A girls basketball first-round playoff loss to the visiting Vikings.

Grace Soilis stepped to the free throw line for the 'Jackets with the game still tied at 31 with 2:06 left in the extra period, but couldn't get either of her attempts to fall.

She returned with the Vikings leading 33-31 with 32 seconds left and came up empty again on two attempts.

Junior Melaina DeZort also couldn't find the basket on her two free throws in the fourth period as Freeport made just five of its 13 attempts on the night.

“This season, we were anywhere between 55 and 70 percent from the line in games,” said Freeport coach Fred Soilis. “I don't know if it was jitters, but it is what it is.

“Late free throws could have sealed the game for us, for sure, but there were other things that contributed to the loss. We didn't box out and had costly turnovers.”

Mount Pleasant seemed unable to take advantage of Freeport's struggles in overtime. Vikings' forward Tiffany Zelmore, who led all scorers with 23 points, missed her first three free throws in overtime. She finally connected on two with 1:15 left for a two-point lead, then another pair with 30 seconds left.

Zelmore's basket with 28 seconds left in regulation forced the overtime period. She added 11 rebounds.

“She's at the heart of what we do offensively, but she plays great defense, too,” said Vikings' coach Scott Giacobbi. “And you saw it tonight, when the chips were down, she came through with those big free throws.

Freeport (10-3) led 10-4 after one quarter, but the Vikings — Zelmore in particular — got going in the second. She scored nine points to help Mount Pleasant lead 19-16 at the break.

Freeport rebounded, holding the Vikings (11-7) to no field goals and just two points in the third quarter. Grace Soilis drained two treys and scored eight points in the period and the 'Jackets held a slim 25-21 lead afterward.

“Freeport plays very good defense, the best help-side defense we've seen,” said Giacobbi.

Soilis' baskets, coupled with Mount Pleasant's near-scoreless third period, seemed to give momentum back to Freeport. But the 'Jackets misfired from the outside, missing all seven of their 3-point attempts in the fourth period and overtime.

For the game, Freeport was four of 27 from beyond the arc.

“We have several goals going into every game,” Fred Soilis said. “One of them is to take at least 50 shots, whether they're layups, 3-pointers ... 50 shots. We're not afraid to shoot and you can't win if you don't shoot the ball.”

DeZort led Freeport with 12 points and Soilis added 10.

“We really didn't get going until mid-January because of COVID,” said Fred Soilis. “There's no reason to be upset. We got this far and played 13 games.”
