County GOP censures Toomey
The Butler County Republican Committee of Pennsylvania voted Wednesday evening to censure U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., over his vote to convict former President Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial.
Republican Party committee members around the state discussed the matter as they met remotely Wednesday.
Butler County’s committee was among groups of Republicans from several counties who voted in favor of censuring the senator. A statement from the Butler County committee described Toomey’s participation in the impeachment trial as “unconstitutional.”
The committee voted 94-2 in favor of censuring Toomey.
“After deliberation in accordance with our bylaws and with respect and consideration of law under the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and U.S. Constitution, we believe Sen. Pat Toomey failed to uphold his oath of office to support and defend the U.S. Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” the Butler County committee’s statement read. A censure is a symbolic gesture that holds no actual ramifications for Toomey, who announced in October that he will not run for another term.
