COVID UPDATE 2/24: Thousands getting COVID-19 vaccinations everyday

Tens of thousands of Pennsylvania residents are receiving COVID-19 vaccinations every day in the state's phased vaccine distribution plan, state officials said. Of the 3,172,900 doses allocated to date, 2,083,277 doses had been administered through Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health said Wednesday. Of those 2,083,277 administered doses, 1,498,265 were first doses and 585,012 were second doses. The first doses account for 82% of the 1,836,065 first-dose allocation and the second doses accounted for 44% of the 1,336,835 second-dose allocation. The vaccine is being administered to people in phase 1A of the distribution plan, which includes long-term care facility residents, people 65 and older, health care workers and people ages 16 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions. With 4.5 million state residents age 56 and older, the state has not opened the 1B phase, includes first responders, corrections officers and people working in education, food and agriculture, post offices, grocery stores, manufacturing, public transit, clergy, people who care for children and adults in child or adult day care programs, people living in congregate settings and people receiving home and community-based services. In addition, the department reported that the recovery rate has inched its way to 90%. The rate was 85% three weeks ago. The department also reported 2,786 new positive cases Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to 920,634. There were 76 new deaths as of Tuesday, raising the total to 23,787. In the county, the 29 new cases reported by the state raises the total number of residents who contracted the virus since the pandemic began to 8,853. No new deaths were reported in the county. Butler Memorial Hospital reported having 13 COVID-19 patients, including four in intensive care.
