Still OK being a Pirate fan

Yes, I am a Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

I admit it.

And ya know what? It’s OK.

I don’t feel a need to attend a Pirates Anonymous meeting and bear my soul. Nor should I be checked for delusional behavior with my current state of mind.

Are the Pirates going to be bad?

Of course they are. Mitch Keller has yet to prove he’s a consistent major league pitcher and he is considered the ace of the starting rotation. The starting lineup has very little power. Brian Goodwin, signed recently to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, may be their starting center fielder.

These are not promising things.

My prediction for the Bucs this season? 55-107.

There’s no sense in sugar-coating this. It’s not going to be pretty.

But pitchers and catchers have reported to Bradenton, Fla. That includes Mars product David Bednar. Won’t it be fun to see how he does this year?

That’s the beauty of baseball. No matter how bad things seem, there are always things about your team that keep you interested.

When and where will Adam Frazier be traded? You know it’s coming.

Can Cole Tucker cut it as an every-day major league shortstop?

How good is Ke’Bryan Hayes? Was his performance over the latter stages of last season a fluke or is the much-maligned Pirate farm system finally producing another star player?

Does Gregory Polanco have anything left? He’ll certainly be given the opportunity to show if he does.

Phil Evans was playing some great baseball before having his season curtailed by that violent collision he had with Polanco last year. Can he come back and show he’s the real deal?

Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds were high-average hitters in 2019. Can they find that form again?

All of these are intriguing questions to the true Pirate fan.

And, yes, I am one.

The few loyal ones who are left, mock us if you will.

But even if this team does lose 107 games this year, there exists the chance that if I go spend a summer evening or afternoon at PNC Park — presuming fans are allowed in — I will see one of those 55 wins.

Again, the beauty of baseball.

It has its problems — an uneven financial playing field, questionable ownerships, long games, too many homers and strikeouts, not enough triples, stolen bases and hit-and-runs — to name a few.

But it’s there every day.

Lose today, maybe you’ll win tomorrow.

The Pirates have torn it down and are starting over. Will they succeed in building it back up?

That’s another one of those intriguing questions — that holds my interest, anyway.

Let’s go, Bucs!
