Annual Easter egg hunt is canceled

Children start their quest at a previous Saxonburg Area Business Association annual Easter Egg Hunt at Roebling Park.

While the coronavirus pandemic has claimed another longtime event, organizers haven't given up on entertaining the children.

The Saxonburg Business Association Easter Egg Hunt scheduled for April 3 has been canceled.

The event, which sees more than 400 children gather in Roebling Park each spring, was deemed too difficult to manage during the pandemic.

Kerri LeDonne, an association board member, said the restrictions given to the association by the borough would have required strict management of the number of people going in and coming out as well as oversight of social distancing.

LeDonne said it would have been impossible for association members to successfully manage the restrictions.

“We put the health and safety of everyone involved ahead of the event,” she said.

Still, the association is in the process of figuring out a safe Easter event for the families who normally attend the egg hunt, such as the safe appearance by the Easter Bunny in the borough.

The association is also considering holding the egg hunt in the summer if COVID-19 cases are down and the restrictions are relaxed.

“And we hope to be back in 2022,” LeDonne said.

She said association members were extremely disappointed at the cancellation of the egg hunt, but felt they had no choice.

“It's unfortunate for everyone who participates annually,” LeDonne said. “I know it was a family tradition of mine.”
