Women's club bakes about 3,000 cookies for replacement fundraiser

CRANBERRY TWP — As the cookies rose, so did the funds.

In their first bake sale, a new means of garnering support after annual fundraising events were canceled, the Cranberry Women's Club baked up nearly 3,000 cookies to raise funds for its community ventures.

“We had never done anything like that,” club member Kathleen Perry said, adding she was more than pleased with the turnout.

The club had originally planned to sell 50 trays of two dozen cookies; instead, they ended up selling 120 trays that included 20 different types of treats.

Those funds will help the club continue its charitable efforts, as it had to cancel last year's Spring Tea and fall Farkleberry events, which help the organization raise the roughly $10,000 it donates to local nonprofits.

The group canceled this year's Spring Tea as well — although the cookies would make a tasty and tasteful pairing — leaving the bake sale and an upcoming basket raffle as its means of supporting other community organizations.

But the cancellation of fundraisers doesn't cancel the women's club's efforts. Its scholarships will still be granted, and the organization continues to support book fairs at Seneca Valley School District's elementary and middle schools.

“The money goes to those kids who can't purchase books,” Perry said. “The school picks whoever those kids are, so we don't know who they are. We think that that's a very important thing to help with.”

Although the club's mission hasn't changed, the way it supports the community has. But that's just part of being such a group in these times, Perry said.

“Every community group, we're all in the same boat,” she said. “Every community group is helping in one way or another. Everybody's really passionate about these projects.”
