COVID cases continue to mount; 103 in county

Butler County saw 103 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one new death Saturday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The new cases raise the number of county residents who contracted the coronavirus to 7,638, and the additional death raises the county total to 288 fatalities since the pandemic began.

Statewide, 7,166 additional positive cases were reported Saturday, bringing the total to 761,777.

There are 4,848 people hospitalized statewide with COVID-19, nearly double the peak in the spring. Of that number, 1,010 patients are in an intensive care unit. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.

The trend in the 14-day moving average number of hospitalized patients per day has increased by nearly 4,800 since the end of September. The statewide percent of those testing positive for the coronavirus for the week of Jan. 1 to Jan. 7 was 14.4%.

As of noon Friday, there were 231 new deaths statewide for a total of 19,188 fatalities attributed to COVID-19.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 59,243 cases among residents and 11,157 cases among employees, for a total of 70,400 at 1,513 facilities in all 67 counties. Out of the total statewide deaths, 9,985 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities. About 21,475 cases are among health care workers across the state.

Through Jan. 14, 427,713 doses of the vaccine have been administered, including vaccine administration through the CVS drug store chain as part of the Federal Pharmacy Partnership. There are 307,915 people who have received one dose and 59,899 people who have received two doses for a total of 427,713 doses administered.

In Butler County, 5,365 people have received one dose of the vaccine, and 1,143 have received both doses.
