YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO — Local students are among the nearly 400 Youngstown State University honors students who have received their Honors College pin.

The award signifies that students have already earned at least half of the honors credits needed prior to graduation. Pin recipients include:

Butler: Shelby Slomers

Rimersburg: Coleman Buchanan, Samantha Runyan.

Honors students complete honors courses, community service and engagement activities as members of the college.

Madeline Fox of Butler has been named one 46 recipients of the 2021 Marshall Scholarships. The winners, considered to be among the best and brightest university students and recent graduates in the United States, were chosen following a rigorous selection process and will begin graduate studies at many of the United Kingdom's top universities.Madeline, who is finishing a bachelor's of philosophy thesis at the University of Pittsburgh, plans post-graduate work at the University of York.The 2017 Butler High School graduate is the daughter of Randy and Linda Fox of Center Township.Initially conceived as a way to strengthen U.K. and U.S. relations after World War II, and as a thank you from the U.K. for its namesake — the Marshall Plan — the Marshall Scholarship program gave U.S. applicants their choice of study at any British university. The program has grown exponentially from 12 students awarded the scholarship in 1953 to 46 students in 2021.

Several Mars Area High School students were selected by solo audition for various Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Chorus honors.Seniors Meredith Gaura and Aria Ramanathan and junior Katherine Ball were selected for Regional Chorus. They will have an opportunity to audition for PMEA All-State Chorus.Meredith, Aria and Katherine earned first chair, third chair and sixth chair, respectively. They have also been selected for PMEA District Chorus.Others selected for PMEA District Chorus are seniors Isabelle Spoores, Julia Wasielewski and Luke Whittaker; junior Madison Moan; and sophomores Molly Suppo, Madeline Wolf and Hunter Spuntak.Meredith Gaura, Aria Ramanathan, Luke Whittaker, Katherine Ball and Isabela Montes were selected for PMEA Honors Chorus.This school year, students were asked to record and submit their auditions for consideration.All PMEA honors, district and region music festivals that were to be held during the 2020-21 school year are canceled.

Several Mars Area High School students were selected by solo audition for Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Band honors.Seniors Carly King and Alexander Smith and sophomore Andrew Nelson qualified for PMEA Region Band.The three, who were selected for PMEA District Band, will have an opportunity to audition for PMEA All-State Band.Also selected for PMEA District Band were seniors Elizabeth Caldwell, Hannah Miller and Andrew Riska; juniors Evan Rojas, Luke Weiland and Austin Wagner; and sophomores Adriana Najjar and Madelyn Ostapchenko.Elizabeth Caldwell, Carly King, Hannah Miller, Andrew Riska, Alexander Smith, Evan Rojas, Luke Weiland, Adriana Najjar, Andrew Nelson, Madelyn Ostapchenko, Teo Biaggini, Alex Schumann and Meghan Smith qualified for PMEA Honors Band.Of note, Carly King and Andrew Nelson earned first chair in their respective sections. Carly received the highest total score of all students who auditioned, regardless of instrument.This school year, students were asked to record and submit their auditions for consideration.All PMEA honors, district and region music festivals that were to be held during the 2020-21 school year are canceled.

Two Knoch High School choir members will represent the South Butler County School District at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association district competition.Sophomore Mackenzie Protos, a soprano, was selected for both PMEA Choir and PMEA Honors Choir.Senior Abigail McAuley, also a soprano, was chosen for PMEA District Choir.While district competition will not be held this year because of the pandemic, Michael Sypien, Knoch High choir instructor, said the district is extremely proud of the two students for being selected by audition.
