Action needed to make Route 68 safer

Now the election is over (Biden won, deal with it), it is time for people in this area to focus on concerns that affect their everyday lives. Like driving on Route 68, for instance. Especially, the stretch of road from Butler to Evans City.

My understanding is that improvements to this highway won’t begin until three years from now. If that is the case, then certain actions should be taken to ensure the safety of the thousands of people who use the road daily:

Reduce the speed limit to 45 mph. Let’s face it, the posted speed limit is too high for this road. By comparison, Route 19 from Zelienople to Cranberry has a maximum limit of 50 mph. And it has more lanes.

If the state won’t reduce the speed limit, at least begin increasing it from east to west miles after Honda North. Presently, drivers can start to floor it right before two stop lights, numerous businesses and homes. At the very least, the speed limit should remain at 45 mph well beyond the Butler Farm Market.

Make all of 68 from Butler to Evans City a no-passing zone. There is no place along this stretch of highway where it is safe to pass.

Start ticketing people for speeding. Obviously, with a speed limit of 55 mph, many drivers are going upward of 70.

Safety comes first. If you look closely, there are at least two crosses along this stretch of the highway. Let’s hope there aren’t anymore added anytime soon.
