The Butler County Democratic Committee isn't countering President Donald Trump's rally Saturday at the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport, but has scheduled a weekend full of events aimed at rallying Democratic support.

The committee's last “Rush Hour Rally” of the election season is Friday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the intersection of routes 19 and 228 in Cranberry Township.

Committee Chairwoman Catherine Lalonde said volunteers have been holding signs and rallying passing motorists along busy roads and intersections for the past six weeks.

“Basically, cheering on the drivers and letting them know there are Democrats in Butler County,” Lalonde said.

Friday will be the third time a rush-hour rally has been held at the route 19-228 intersection. Other locations have been in Butler Township, Center Township, Sarver and Evans City.

The committee is holding its own rally Sunday at 1 p.m. in Adams Township Park at the township pavilion. Democratic candidates including Kristy Gnibus, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th; Dan Smith, who is challenging state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th; Sam Doctor, who is challenging state Rep. Marci Mustello, R-11th; Shelbie Stromyer, who is challenging state Sen. Scott Hutchinson, R-10th; Phil Heasley, who is challenging state Rep. Tim Bonner, R-8th; and other candidates will speak at the rally.

Following the rally, a car caravan in support of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden will leave from the park.

“We're doing a “Ridin' with Biden” car caravan around the county starting around 2:30 p.m. We will decorate cars,” Lalonde said.

She said Trump's planned visit and his daughter Ivanka Trump's Wednesday visit to Lawrence County could be signs that Trump is worried about the Kelly-Gnibus race.

Trump's rally could also lead to the spreading of COVID-19, she said.

“I imagine it's going to be another super spreader event. In spite of Trump denying COVID exists, it's causing a lot of trouble right now,” Lalonde said.
