State COVID cases continue to increase

Butler County saw 45 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend as Pennsylvania continues to see a rise in the number of new daily infections.

The county's total number of coronavirus cases now stands at 1,341, although no new deaths were reported over the weekend, leaving that total at 27 individuals.

In 17 nursing and personal care homes, there have been 84 positive cases among residents and 42 among employees. Eight of the county's 27 deaths have occurred at those facilities.

Pennsylvania as a whole had its third-highest daily rise in reported infections Saturday, adding 2,040 cases to the count. That stands behind only the record set Friday and the 2,060 cases reported on April 8.

Statewide, 41 people were reported dead due to complications of COVID-19 over the weekend.

The Department of Health reports that significantly more young people are being infected by the virus. In Southwest Pennsylvania, nearly 13% of cases are among 19-to-24-year-olds, up from 5% in April.

Two school districts have reported cases of COVID-19 among students or staff.Butler Area School District reported its first COVID-19 infections at its schools on Friday. An alert posted on the district's website said an individual from the Intermediate High School had disclosed to administrators they had the infection.BASD did not indicate if the infected person was a student, staff member or faculty; if they were showing symptoms; or when the last day the person was in the school was. The alert did, however, say that the person did not have any close contacts at school.Another alert on the website said an individual who interacts with people from multiple schools had self-disclosed their diagnosis of COVID-19. In this instance, the district had notified those considered close contacts — that is, someone within six feet for at least 15 minutes or someone directly exposed to “respiratory secretions.”In both cases, BASD sanitized the areas where the infected individuals had contact in addition to its daily cleaning.Seneca Valley School District sent a letter Sunday informing parents that two siblings enrolled in third and fourth grades at Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School had tested positive for the virus. The letter stated the two students were asymptomatic and that they were last in school Wednesday. SVSD said it will make contact via written notice with “potential close contacts,” and may ask some to stay at home until the state Department of Health can make contact. These latest two cases at Seneca Valley mark the sixth case in the district since the beginning of the school year, and the fourth among students.
