Butler garbage bills will slightly decrease in 2021

Butler residents will see a slight decrease in their garbage bills next year under a new collection contract approved by the City Council on Tuesday.

Council approved a three-year contract and a two-year extension with Vogel Disposal, replacing Waste Management as the contractor.

Residents currently pay $20.69 a month in the final year of the current three-year contract with Waste Management. The monthly fee drops slightly to $20.55 for 2021 under the contract with Vogel. Both companies bill customers quarterly.

The total monthly fee will increase to $21.16 in 2022 and to $21.80 in 2023 under the Vogel contract. The fee for garbage collection is $17.55 in 2021, $18.16 in 2022 and $18.80 in 2023 plus a $3 fee for collecting recyclable materials.

Waste Management's proposal for the new contract included monthly fees of $20.79 in 2021, $21.42 in 2022 and $22.06 in 2023. Garbage collection fees were proposed at $16.85 in 2021, $17.36 in 2022 and $17.88 in 2023 plus recycling fees of $3.94 in 2021, $4.06 in 2022 and $4.18 in 2023.

In the two-year extension, Vogel's fees are $22.68 in 2024 and $23.59 in 2025. Those fees include $19.68 and $20.59, respectively, for garbage collection and $3 in both years for recycling.

Waste Management's proposal included fees of $22.95 and $23.86, respectively, including $18.60 for garbage and $4.35 for recycling in 2024, and $19.34 for garbage and $4.52 for recycling in 2025.

Clear and colored glass will no longer be collected with recyclable materials.

Bulky household waste items will be picked on the first week of each month instead of weekly.

Residents can still dispose of up to seven 40-pound bags of garbage with pickup, and recycling will continue to be collected every other week.
