Knoch senior was riding at ATV park

Teen died at hospital after being thrown from vehicle

Robert J. Kotchey was enjoying a day of fun at an ATV recreation facility when he was killed while riding.

A news release from State Police Troop A in Indiana County reports that Kotchey, 17, a Knoch High School senior, was riding an ATV at Tri-County ATV in Pine Township, Indiana County.

The 1,000-acre grounds allow ATV enthusiasts who are members to ride on trails cut through the woods, according to its website.

Tri-County ATV's webpage states the organization is a nonprofit with more than 800 members.

The news release from Troop A in Indiana County states that investigating trooper Philip Dern responded to an accident at Tri-County ATV around 8 p.m. Saturday.

Dern determined that the ATV operated by Kotchey had overturned and the young man was thrown from the vehicle.

He did not have any passengers on the machine at the time of the crash, Dern reported.

Kotchey was transported by ambulance to Indiana Regional Medical Center for treatment, but Dern learned later that evening that Kotchey had died after arriving at the medical center.

Although a post on Tri-County ATV's Facebook page reminded members that the facility would be closed to riding on Oct. 17 and 24, so Halloween decorations could be erected, Trooper Clifford Greenfield, public information officer at Troop A in Indiana County, said the police report indicated Kotchey was permitted to ride at Tri-County ATV on Saturday.

Tri-County ATV did not return calls from the Eagle on Tuesday.
